Day One

Dambulla & Sigiriya

3.5 hours' drive from Airport

From the airport, drive directly to the Cultural Triangle. Your first stop is the Dambulla Cave Temple — a magnificent UNESCO site where five cave shrines house over 150 Buddha statues and some of the finest ancient frescoes in Sri Lanka. The caves are most beautiful in the soft winter light of the afternoon.

By evening, arrive at Sigiriya for an early night, rested and ready for the dawn climb tomorrow.

Day Two

Sigiriya & Polonnaruwa

Polonnaruwa is 1.5 hrs from Sigiriya

Rise early for the climb up Sigiriya Rock — most dramatic in the cool morning air, when the plains below are still misted and the summit commands uninterrupted views in every direction. Descend before the midday heat and continue to Polonnaruwa — Sri Lanka's medieval capital — where the ruins of royal palaces, monastic complexes and rock-carved Buddhas are best explored by bicycle at a leisurely pace.

Day Three

Kandy: The Hill Capital

2.5 hours' drive

Drive south into the hills to Kandy — the last royal capital of Sri Lanka and the island's spiritual centre. Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, walk the lake road, explore the old market quarter. In the evening, attend the traditional Kandyan cultural show if time allows, and wander the illuminated streets around the lake.

Day Four

Nuwara Eliya: By Train

Scenic train journey

The train from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya is one of the world's great rail journeys. The carriages wind through tea estates, cross Victorian viaducts and descend into valleys of cloud before climbing again to the cool heights. The journey takes around four hours and every minute offers something worth photographing. Arrive in Nuwara Eliya in the afternoon, settle in and breathe the highland air.

Day Five

Ella: Hikes & Views

1.5 hours' drive or scenic train

Drive or take the train to Ella — a small hill town beloved for its views, its trails and its exceptional atmosphere. The Nine Arch Bridge, Ella Rock, Little Adam's Peak: three classic walks through misty forest and tea, each offering a different perspective on the central highlands. Stay for a sunset dinner at one of the town's hillside restaurants.

Day Six

Yala: The Leopard Park

4 hours' drive

Drive south to Yala National Park — home to one of the world's highest concentrations of leopard, alongside elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles and an extraordinary array of bird life. An afternoon and morning game drive gives you two chances in the park, in the light that makes the animals most active and the photography most rewarding.

Day Seven

Galle Fort

2 hours' drive

The coast road carries you west to Galle — one of the best preserved colonial sea fortresses in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Dutch-built ramparts, the coral stone streets, the old churches and the boutique hotels and galleries housed within former merchant villas make this one of the most atmospheric destinations in Sri Lanka. An evening walk on the ramparts as the sun sets over the Indian Ocean is the perfect final memory.

Tonight you sleep at

Galle to Airport: The Expressway Home

After a final morning in Galle Fort — perhaps a last coffee on the ramparts overlooking the Indian Ocean — your private transfer joins the southern expressway north to Bandaranaike International Airport. Eight days that cover the essential Sri Lanka with clarity and depth. A classical journey, unhurried and complete.
