Arrival & Negombo

20 min from Airport

Your journey into Sri Lanka's colonial past begins the moment you land. A private transfer from Bandaranaike International Airport carries you to Negombo, a coastal town of Dutch canals, fishing villages and faded colonial charm. This first evening is entirely yours — perhaps a walk along the canal, a quiet dinner by the sea, and an early night before the days ahead.

Day Two

Kandy: The Last Kingdom

3.5 hours' drive

The drive to Kandy winds through rubber estates and palm groves before the landscape rises into forested hills. Kandy, the last capital of the ancient kings of Sri Lanka, occupies a magnificent bowl of hills around its tranquil lake. Explore the old town on foot: the Kandy Market, the gem quarter, the colonial-era buildings lining the lake road.

In the late afternoon, attend the rituals at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic — the spiritual centre of Theravada Buddhism and home to one of its most sacred relics.

Day Three

Kandy: Craft & Culture

Today you go deeper into the cultural life of Kandy. Begin with the Three Temple Loop by tuk tuk — Gadaladeniya, Lankatilaka and Embekka — a half-day journey through paddy fields and village life to some of the finest examples of Kandyan architecture and stone carving.

In the afternoon, visit a batik workshop and the National Museum, then take a quiet walk around the lake as the city softens into evening.

Day Four

Nuwara Eliya: The Hill Country

2.5 hours' drive

The road climbs into a different world — cooler, greener, draped in tea. Nuwara Eliya sits at over 1,800 metres above sea level, surrounded by some of Ceylon's finest estates. The colonial architecture here tells the story of the British planters who built the town: stone churches, race courses, mock-Tudor hotels, rose gardens.

Visit a tea estate in the afternoon: walk the slopes, watch the plucking and sorting process, and taste the finished tea in the factory.

Day Five

Nuwara Eliya: Highlands & Waterfalls

A leisurely morning with breakfast in the colonial dining room before setting out for Moon Plains — rolling highland grasslands with sweeping views across the central hills. Continue to Lovers' Leap waterfall and, if the season is right, Gregory Lake for a quiet afternoon by the water.

The evening is yours in the town's genteel atmosphere: perhaps a game of billiards or a drink by the fireplace at your hotel.

Day Six

Koslanda & Lipton's Seat

2 hours' drive

One of the great lesser-known journeys in Sri Lanka's hill country. Wind down through Haputale and into the Dambatenne tea estate — land once owned by Sir Thomas Lipton himself. The road climbs to Lipton's Seat, a viewpoint at 1,970 metres from which, on a clear morning, you can see almost a third of Sri Lanka spread below.

The drive itself passes through miles of manicured tea, the scent of leaf in the air and the silence of the high country all around you.

Day Seven

Galle: The Fort

4 hours' drive from Koslanda

Descend to the south coast and arrive at Galle — the finest colonial fortress in Asia. Built by the Portuguese in the sixteenth century and expanded by the Dutch, the Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most intact colonial settlements in the entire Indian Ocean world.

Spend the afternoon simply walking the ramparts and streets: the lighthouse, the old churches, the boutique hotels and galleries housed inside former merchant villas, the sea view from the bastion as the sun sets.

◈
Tonight you sleep at
Fort Bazaar
Galle Fort, Southern Province
Galle: The Coast
08
Day Eight

Galle: The Coast

The southern coast offers an entirely different Sri Lanka from the highlands. This morning, explore the coast beyond the Fort: the stilt fishermen at Koggala, the sea turtle hatcheries at Habaraduwa, the quiet lagoons and village roads. Return to the Fort for lunch at one of its celebrated restaurants.

Afternoon is free for shopping in the Fort's galleries, another walk on the ramparts, or simply watching the Indian Ocean from the hotel terrace.

Day Nine

Colombo: The Capital

2.5 hours' drive from Galle

The expressway north takes you to Colombo — a city of layered colonial identities: Portuguese, Dutch, British, each leaving its architecture, its street names, its traditions. Explore the Fort district and the Pettah bazaar on foot, then the leafy residential streets of Cinnamon Gardens, the National Museum and the Colombo Lotus Tower.

Dinner at one of the city's excellent restaurants before a final night in Sri Lanka.
