Drive north to the Cultural Triangle. Stop first at Dambulla Cave Temple — five cave shrines of the first century BC, their interiors brilliant with fresco and golden Buddhas. Then continue to Sigiriya: arrive in the afternoon, settle in at your property, and walk the water gardens as the light changes over the rock.
Rise early for the pre-dawn climb up Sigiriya Rock — the summit at sunrise is among the most memorable experiences Sri Lanka offers. Then drive north to Anuradhapura — the ancient capital — for a private guided visit through the sacred city. Return via Minneriya National Park, where the great elephant gathering (seasonal) sees hundreds of elephants converging around the ancient reservoir in the late afternoon.
The drive south descends through the Cultural Triangle's dry forest and into the green hills around Kandy. A UNESCO city of profound spiritual significance, Kandy is the spiritual capital of Theravada Buddhism and home to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Afternoon at leisure in the city; evening at the temple for the daily rituals.
The Three Temple Loop by tuk tuk: Gadaladeniya, Lankatilaka and Embekka — three extraordinary temples accessible only through the village roads that skirt Kandy's surrounding hills. A spice plantation, a working botanical garden, and a final view of the city from the hills before descending for the afternoon. Dinner at a local restaurant that knows how to cook the real food of the Kandyan hills.
Board the train at Kandy for one of the world's most celebrated rail journeys. The line winds through the tea estates above Hatton, crosses Victorian viaducts above cloud-filled valleys and climbs through the hill country to Ella. The views from the open carriage doors are extraordinary. Arrive at Ella in the afternoon and begin the hike to Little Adam's Peak before sunset.
Drive south from Ella to the dry zone scrubland of Yala — home to one of the world's highest leopard densities. An afternoon game drive introduces you to the park's extraordinary wildlife: elephant, sloth bear, crocodile, peacock, and a hundred species of bird alongside the leopards. The light in the late afternoon is dramatic; the guides know the big cats' routes.
Drive west along the coast road to Ahangama — a quiet stretch of the southern coast between Galle and Weligama, known for its stilt fishermen, its wave-facing boutique hotels and its unhurried atmosphere. Two nights here at the end of a diverse journey provide exactly the right counterpoint: the sound of the Indian Ocean, meals at leisure, and no agenda at all.
A full day with no fixed plans. Perhaps an excursion into Galle Fort — only 15 minutes along the coast — for an afternoon of exploring the ramparts and the old Dutch streets. Or whale watching from Mirissa in the morning, if the season is right. Or simply the pool, the surf, the coast restaurants and the slow rhythm of a Sri Lankan seaside afternoon.
