Drive north into the heart of Sri Lanka's ancient civilisation. The Cultural Triangle encompasses three UNESCO World Heritage Sites within a few hours' drive — and your first day here is spent reaching Sigiriya via Dambulla Cave Temple. Stop at this extraordinary rock fortress of caves, whose interior walls carry over 1,500 square metres of ancient fresco work. Then press on to Sigiriya itself, arriving in time to watch the light change over the rock.
Begin before dawn for the climb up Sigiriya Rock — Sri Lanka's most iconic sight and a UNESCO monument of world significance. The Lion Gate, the frescoed galleries, the mirror wall inscribed with verses by medieval visitors, and the summit plateau with its palace ruins and boundless views: Sigiriya rewards the early riser with extraordinary solitude.
By afternoon, drive to Polonnaruwa — Sri Lanka's medieval capital. Explore the ruins by bicycle: royal palaces, immense dagobas, the moonstone gateways and the magnificent Gal Vihara rock carvings.
A morning in the Cultural Triangle — perhaps Minneriya National Park for elephant gathering, or a village spice garden — before heading south towards Kandy. The road descends from the dry plains into increasingly lush hills, the landscape transforming around you. Arrive in Kandy by late afternoon.
A full day in the last Kandyan kingdom. Morning at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, then the Kandy market, the National Museum, and a walk around the lake. Afternoon: the Three Temple Loop by tuk tuk through the villages surrounding the city — a quiet journey through working Sri Lanka, ending at a spice plantation with highland views.
The road west from Kandy climbs into the tea country. You are heading for Hatton — a district of high-altitude estates, colonial bungalows and one of the island's best-kept secrets: a viewpoint known only to a handful of guides, accessible by a short walk through tea, where the landscape opens to reveal an extraordinary panorama of the central highlands.

Your guide takes you on foot this morning — through estate paths and forest tracks to the viewpoint that makes Hatton unique. The walk itself is the destination: past tea pluckers, through avenues of silver oak, emerging finally to a vantage point where Sri Lanka's mountains stack up in every direction. Return for a long lunch and an afternoon at leisure in the estate.
An early morning walk to the secret viewpoint at first light offers the most ethereal experience, when the valleys below are still filled with mist and the peaks are perfectly clear above them.
Drive south from the hills to Sri Lanka's most celebrated national park. Yala is home to one of the world's highest densities of leopard, alongside elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles and hundreds of bird species. Arrive in time for an afternoon game drive — the light in the late afternoon is extraordinary, the dry forest alive with movement.
The best time in Yala is the early morning, when the air is cool and the animals are active. Your guide takes you through the park's varied terrain — open scrubland, forest, lagoons, beach — tracking leopards by pug marks and reading the behaviour of the deer and peacocks. Return to camp for breakfast after the drive, then an afternoon at leisure in the lodge.
The coast road west from Yala passes through Hambantota, Tangalle and Weligama before arriving at the great Dutch fort of Galle — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the finest intact colonial settlements in Asia. Spend the afternoon exploring the ramparts, the Dutch churches, the coral stone streets and the excellent restaurants within the fort walls.
A final morning on the southern coast. The sea turtle hatcheries of Habaraduwa, the stilt fishermen at Koggala, the mangrove lagoons at Balapitiya — or simply a morning on the terrace of the fort hotel, watching the Indian Ocean. Afternoon is yours for last-minute exploration and a long dinner at one of Galle's celebrated tables.
After a final breakfast in Galle Fort, your private transfer joins the southern expressway — the fastest road in Sri Lanka — travelling north to Bandaranaike International Airport in time for your departure. Twelve days of discovery behind you; the stories will take longer still to fully arrive.
